Can I create an apartment on my property for a family member or friend?

Charleston's City Council adopted an ordinance in 2017 allowing homeowners in areas zoned for single family dwellings to establish Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) on their properties. Sometimes referred to as 'granny flats,' these ADUs can be occupied by any tenant while the principle structure must be occupied by its owner. For more information on ADUs, review this Guide to Accessory Dwelling Units.
